INTRODUCTION OF TANG SOO DO IN MALAYSIA
Tang Soo Do is a martial art which trains in attacking and defending with bare hands and feet. Each training begins with warming up exercises – stretching and loosening of muscles and joints to increase flexibility and agility. During training, students are taught in punching, blocking, kicking, and combinations of hand and kicking techniques according to their grades so that the students could concentrate in developing the techniques correctly with the proper methods of breathing, balance, speed and power. The instructor explains every movement of the muscle or body parts involved in performing a technique whether punching or kicking so that the technique performed achieves speed, power and sharpness.
Formation – Hyung (an organized pattern of movements) is part of Tang Soo Do training – from a simple formation to a more complex formation, which requires concentration, coordination of balance, power and movement control. The techniques information must flow naturally and ease in reflex responses.
Finally, practices of free fighting such as blocks, punches and kicks up put into use. This is where one learns to fight effectively – tactical footwork, timing, speed and power. Continuous practices develop confidence and ability of self-defense. Practice makes perfect. The whole season of training not only develops physical fitness – strength, flexibility, agility, muscular toning and power but also mental fitness – concentration, alertness, self-confidence, calmness and self-discipline.
Strength training: Tang Soo Do provides an accurate and scientific method in developing power in punches and kicks. Power test are conducted to measure the achievement of the trainee.
Important factor: Achievement is measured by output. The harder you train, the more you achieve in physical fitness, mental fitness and health. Do not believe in one day self-defense courses which would enable you to ward off an attacker. It Is only through continuous training that you will be able to defend yourself.
The most famous and well-known Tang Soo Do practitioner is Master Chuck Norris, among others are: Pat Johnson (actor and director of “The Karate Kid” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”)
